Dietetics is the science of nutrition and how food and
other nutrients are used for growth and repair and how they can help prevent or
manage chronic disease. Dietitians are a great source of information regarding
weight loss, weight gain, disease management, a vegetarian lifestyle, nutrition
during pregnancy, nutrition for athletic performance, and other basic needs.
Dietetic Counseling Services
Registered Dietitian: A contracted registered dietitian is an individual who
holds a valid registration from the American Dietetic Association’s Council on
Dietetic Registration. An ASH credentialed dietitian has earned a minimum of
bachelor’s degree in nutritional sciences and 900 hours of post-graduate
training in dietetics. A registered dietitian may hold a state-issued license
in addition to their registration (in those states where such a license is
available). Providers must meet ASH credentialing criteria, which includes
maintenance of their professional credentials in good standing with their
regulatory board.
Dietitians provide pre-treatment nutritional assessment to determine the most
appropriate method for treating the patient's symptoms.
ASH Provider of Dietetic Services: An ASH provider of dietetic services is an
individual who has an approved education in dietetic counseling in addition to
other primary fields of expertise. Providers of dietetic counseling services
include licensed nutritionists, medical physicians, and doctors of osteopathy.
These providers hold an active license in their primary profession and have an
approved dietetic education.
