American Specialty Health Awards Scholarships to Acupuncture Students

SAN DIEGO (October 5, 2004) – American Specialty Health (ASH), the nation's leading complementary health care benefits organization, announced that Joanne Wu, a student at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, and Sheri McLellan, a student at the New England School of Acupuncture, are the recipients of scholarships for future acupuncture providers.

The scholarships of $2,500 each are given annually by ASH. The scholarship may be used toward future study in complementary health care.

Criteria for the scholarships include grade point average, financial need, and participation in various professional activities. Each applicant was also required to submit a written essay on their studies in complementary health care. Ms. Wu and Ms. McLellan each submitted essays which examined the role complementary health care will play in mainstream medicine.

"American Specialty Health is proud that these students are committed to pursuing careers in complementary health care," said George DeVries, chairman, president, and CEO of ASH. "These scholarships are a sign of our commitment to and encouragement of students who will be future complementary health care providers."

Each year, students pursuing careers in various aspects of complementary health care may apply for scholarships totaling $41,000 through the ASH scholarship program. Qualifying students are those studying chiropractic, dietetics, naturopathy, massage therapy or acupuncture at any accredited institution in the country. In 2004, ASH will award scholarships in each of the following areas: chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy, naturopathy, and dietetics.
