American Specialty Health Chairman and President, George DeVries, Featured in “Leading by Example” Publication Showcasing Employee Wellness Programs Implemented by Top CEOs

SAN DIEGO (June 22, 2005) - George DeVries, the chairman, president, and chief executive officer of American Specialty Health (ASH), is featured in the publication “Leading by Example,” a compilation of profiles of the nation’s top CEOs which showcases their efforts to implement wellness programs for their employees.

San Diego-based ASH, which found creative ways to help its employees make better health care decisions, is the nation’s leading complementary health benefits organization. ASH’s Healthyroads Wellness Program was implemented in 2003. The program was included in each employee’s overall benefits package and featured online health education, interactive tools and trackers on the Healthyroads.com®, telephone counseling from licensed health care experts, and a proprietary weight management and tobacco cessation program.

The Healthyroads Wellness Program has proved so successful, that it has already been chosen by several major employer groups, including VEBA in California and Electronic Data Systems in Texas, and health plans such as Neighborhood Health Partnership in Florida.

For 2005, Healthyroads includes a Healthy Vending Machine feature, in which Healthyroads provides employers with a variety of nutritious–and tasty–snacks and drinks to replace candy bars, cookies, and sodas in worksite vending machines.

“We’re excited about the Healthyroads Wellness Program because it really is changing the corporate culture, and provides employers with a vehicle for increasing productivity, reducing absenteeism, and lowering health care costs for their employees,” said DeVries. “The readers of ‘Leading by Example’ will see how successful the program has been among our own employees, and other employers will see that our wellness program is a cost-effective way to help their employees live longer and healthier lives.”

San Diego-based American Specialty Health, Incorporated (ASH) and its subsidiaries, including Healthyroads, Inc., comprise the nation’s largest organization for complementary health care benefit programs, health education programs, and health-related products measured in terms of annual revenues, members/insureds, employees, and contracted health plans. ASH administers benefit programs for 12.1 million members and discount programs for over 80 million members. ASH and its subsidiaries are located at 777 Front St., San Diego, Calif. 92101; phone (800) 848-3555.
