SAN DIEGO (August 29, 2005) – American Specialty Health (ASH), the nation’s leading complementary health care benefits organization, announced the winner of its 2005 scholarship award for students pursuing careers in acupuncture.

The scholarship winner is Donald Matesz, a student from the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture in Arizona. He will receive $5,000, which will be applied toward further studies in acupuncture.

Criteria for the scholarship included grade point average, financial need, and participation in various professional activities. Applicants were also required to submit a written essay on their studies in complementary health care. Matesz submitted an essay titled “How Oriental Medicine Can Help Resolve America's Health Care Crisis.”

“American Specialty Health is proud that Mr. Matesz is committed to pursuing a career in complementary health care,” said George DeVries, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of ASH. “This scholarship is a sign of our commitment to and encouragement of students who will become future complementary health care providers.”
