American Specialty Health Awards Scholarships to Chiropractic Students SAN DIEGO (May 30, 2006) – American Specialty Health, the nation’s leading specialty benefits organization for complementary health care and wellness programs, announced the recipients of its annual scholarships for students pursuing careers in chiropractic.
Jessica Barr, a student of Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Ore., and Terese Black, a chiropractic student at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Ill., each will receive $7,500 to pay for school tuition and fees.
The annual ASH Plans scholarships are awarded to chiropractic students by ASH subsidiary American Specialty Health Plans of California, Inc. (ASH Plans) on the basis of grade point average, financial need, participation in professional activities and organizations. Each candidate is also required to compose an essay about the role of chiropractic in the U.S. health care system.
"We’ve selected two outstanding students because of their achievements in school and because of their potential to become outstanding chiropractors,” said George DeVries, chairman, president, and CEO of ASH. “Ms. Barr and Ms. Black have demonstrated that they understand the importance of integrating chiropractic care into our mainstream health care system."
Since 2001, students pursuing careers in various aspects of complementary health care have been eligible to apply for scholarships totaling $45,000 annually through the ASH Scholarship Program. Qualifying students are those studying acupuncture, chiropractic, dietetics, massage therapy, or naturopathy at accredited institutions across the country.
