American Specialty Health Affiliates’ (ASHA) clinical procedure assessment process evaluates diagnostic
and therapeutic procedures against professionally recognized standards of practice, current scientific
evidence, and consensus of appropriate experts. The recommendations of the consensus panel are considered
by ASHA clinical committees when developing criteria, definitions, and processes to support clinical
decision-making within ASHA’s clinical management system. These criteria and processes support the
evaluation of practitioner performance related to the use of specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
during the credentialing and recredentialing processes, clinical services management, and clinical performance
management.
The following procedures are considered to pose a significant health and safety risk and/or to be
scientifically implausible, and indicate an approach to patient evaluation and management that does not meet
generally accepted standards of clinical practice as approved by ASHA clinical committees and which shall
be cause for failure to meet American Specialty Health credentialing criteria:
